Xinyan Carmen Xiang from China, WJ Mouat

My experience of studying in Canada has truly shaped me to the person I am today. Throughout my three years here, I have been constantly amazed the by the diverse culture of Canada, the spectacular landscape of British Columbia, and the supportive learning environment of Abbotsford School District, especially that of the International Program.

From thoughtful welcome lunch to impressive field trips, from organized orientation to joyful year end party, Abbotsford International Program has made its every attempt to make each one of us feel belonged. Every teacher, staff member and international assistant who truly cares about my emotional well-being and has relentlessly assisted me in reaching my academic excellence, empowered me to step out of my comfort zone and to explore challenging yet rewarding activities.

I couldn’t describe how grateful I am to everyone I have met, to everyone that has supported me, encouraged me and motivated me in the past three years. There were ups and downs. For so many times I locked myself in my bedroom wondering why it was so hard to make friends here than that in China, self-doubting myself if I was able to achieve my great plans. However, looking back by the end of the day, all the tears I have shed have built a better me and have pathed the way to a broader horizon.

With a pack of Timbits that marked the start of this thrilling journey, the end of my stay was a bit of a hustle. As Cicero once said, “The life given us, by nature is short, but the memory of a well-spent life is eternal”. My host dad stopped by Mouat on the way to the airport when I gave my final farewell to the place loaded with friendship, mentorship and my personal development. Seeing my picture on wall as the Student of the Month, revisiting the classroom that I held weekly club meeting, walking pass the staff photo where I recognized so many faces that have showed their utmost support, I knew that I have made the most out of my staying in Canada and I believe that all those valuable memories would never be erased.

It was the morning of my arrival in Vancouver. The lady from the program picked me up from the airport with a pack of Timbits and asked for my name with the most heart-warming smile. I said anxiously: “Hi, my name is Carmen.”
