What is there to do in Abbotsford?

Lots!  Throughout the year there are numerous events and celebrations that take place in Abbotsford Schools.  Students can check with International Assistant to find out what is happening when. 

International Field Trips

Each semester we take International Students on a number of full day excursions

  • Vancouver region sightseeing + Vancouver Canucks (professional ice hockey) or Vancouver Whitecaps (professional soccer)
  • Victoria City - students take the ferry to Vancouver Island to visit the beautiful capital city of British Columbia
  • Whistler Mountain skiing and snowboarding - visit one of the top ski destinations in the world.  Includes all transportation, lift tickets, equipment rental and instruction.

Outdoor Education Adventures (organized by the School District)

Operated by School District, the Outdoor Education Club  offers activities after school and on weekends - many students say this is the highlight of their experience.  Hike, camp, rockclimb, go whitewater rafting, ski/snowboard/snowshoe, mountainbike, play paintball.  All activities are with local Canadian students.

Abbotsford is surrounded by mountains, rivers and lakes, making it an ideal place for hiking.  There are more than 70km of easy urban trails throughout the city, and more challenging hikes nearby.

All Weather Amusement Centre

Rain or shine, Castle Fun Park is a great place to race friends in the outdoor GoKarts, play a round of indoor / outdoor minigolf, take a swing at the golf simulator or batting practice cage, find your way through the laser maze....  

Cultus Lake Water Park

Cultus Lake is where to go when the weather gets hot.  Ride waterslides, cool off in the pools, soak up the sun or relax in the shade

Cultus Lake Adventure Park

Cultus Lake Adventure Park  has more than 16 rides and attractions for the whole family, including Adventure golf, and a number of family rides as well as exciting rides for thrill seekers.  All guests to the park are welcomed to enter the park for free, stroll through and enjoy the many sights and sounds surrounding them.

Skateboard Parks

Abbotsford has two skate parks, McMillan Youth Park has a 2300m² street scape - style skate park which provides fun and challenging opportunities for a broad range of skating styles and ability levels. There is also a smaller 370m² hybrid bowl park located between Mouat High School and Colleen and Gordie Howe Middle School. 


From small rainbow trout to hard fighting salmon and giant sturgeon, there are many fishing options nearby

Whitewater Rafting

The Canadian Whitewater Kayaking team practices nearby in the valley's fast flowing rivers.  Professionally guided tours take students safely down the river 


We encourage students to participate in the many sporting activities that are available in our schools.  There are also countless opportunities to be physically active in the community.  Please note that some team activities have demanding practice and game schedules which may require more driving for homestay families than is reasonable.  Students should check with their International Assistant and homestay family before committing to joining a team.

Running Clubs

From slow and steady to serious and competitive, there is a wide range of terrain and a variety of running groups in the city


Abbotsford has 2 public recreation centres with swimming facilities for all ages, as well as a youth swimming club


There are a number of leagues and camps that operate throughout the year, as well as "drop in" basketball sessions where anyone can play at the recreation centres.  


There is something for everyone - more than 70kms of trails crisscross the city, and there are numerous mountainbike trails from easy to expert in the hills that surround the city. 

For those interested in BMX there are indoor and outdoor racetracks

Baseball & Softball


Abbotsford is home to challenging but affordable golf courses in beautiful settings.


There are more than 30 free public courts to play on in Abbotsford.  For students who want to take lessons or play competitively there is also an affordable  tennis program that offers coaching and leagueplay.

Gyms and Fitness Centres

Many International Students stay fit or earn PE credits by working out at the many gyms in Abbotsford.  The Public Recreaction Centres provide great facilities and programs at reasonable prices, and there are MANY private gyms to choose from.  We have just listed a few below...


Twisters Gymnastics is one of Canada's National Training Centres, and is home to Olympic level athletes.  Programs are available for novices to International Competitors

Rock Climbing

Project Climbing Centre provides a great place to develop climbing skills indoors before heading outside to tackle the real rock faces that surround the city.

Martial Arts

There are a wide variety of martial arts clubs providing many opportunities to train throughout the city - below are just a few...


Yoga is offered at multiple yoga studios and fitness centres throughout the city

Wakeboarding / Waterskiing

Albert Dyck park (lake) is home to Valley Wakeboard Cablepark, as well as a waterski club that has hosted national competitions.

Students enjoy this so much as part of our Outdoor Program that they also go and play on the weekends or afterschool​

Horse Riding Lessons

Abbotsford is surrounded by lakes, rivers and mountains so there are beautiful trails to go riding


Many students want to continue their music studies while studying in Abbotsford.  There are a number of good music stores and music schools and numerous private teachers


There are many Dance Studios throughout the city teaching a wide variety of styles.  Students can earn credits for dance classes taken in the community.
