3D Architecture / Engineering

Abbotsford was the first high school program in North America to have a 3D Printer

This is an ideal course for students interested in engineering, architecture or design.  Because of our many years of experience teaching this program, Abbotsford graduates have gone on to further their studies and work in design related industries.  One of our graduates studied Engineering and went on to work with TESLA.  Another student won a prestigious SIEMENS design competition and went on study at the Wyss Institute at Harvard University.  He is now completing his PhD in Engineering at Waterloo, and is going to be doing his Post Doctorate at Harvard Medical School - see his comments about this course at the bottom of the page.

Students learn and use industry standard programs auto-CAD, Inventor and Revit to produce computer generated technical and and mechanical drawings.  Architectural drafting styles are used to draw impressive housing, apartment and commercial building plans.  By the end of the course students are able to draw complete sets of plans needed to build a house, 3D solid models, 3D animations and fully rendered layouts.  Students use Oculus Quest 2 Virtual Reality headsets to walk through their Architectural Design projects. This gives students a chance to get a real life feel for their building designs enabling them to find deficiencies and redesign on the spot.   The use of VR in architecture is a powerful tool and a glimpse of the future for our students to experience.

After the design process is complete, students use a variety of tools to produce models.  In addition to 3D printers our schools have CNC's, Routers, Laser cutters, Plasma cutters...

Below are some samples of work that students have done.  There are large files, so give them a moment to load, then you can drag around and explore.

“As a first-generation immigrant, I have experienced firsthand the transformational impact of exceptional teachers at W.J. Mouat Secondary School in Abbotsford. Many teachers gave me valuable perspective, encouragement, and kindness during my primary and high school years in a new country. They exhibited humility, showed compassion, and instilled confidence and motivation in their students. I remember my design and drafting teacher encouraging me to be creative and innovative, helping me enter design competitions, and igniting my passion for engineering. I remember how excellent the science and math classes were; they prepared me well for my first year of university classes. I gained valuable work experience through an internship at an engineering consultant firm through teacher recommendations. My passion and drive for my field of soft robotics result from these remarkable mentors’ influence leading me to pursue a career in academia.

I am finishing my Ph.D. in Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo and pursuing a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School with generous funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).”
